Overview

What are Juvéderm & Restylane?

Juvéderm and Restylane are the two leading brands of hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers — FDA-approved injectable gels that add volume, smooth lines, and restore the youthful contours that aging, gravity, and bone resorption progressively erode. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance already present in the skin, making these fillers exceptionally compatible with human tissue and uniquely reversible.

At Desert Sands, all filler treatments are performed by Shannon Evans, RN, BSN, co-founder and lead aesthetic nurse with twenty-eight years of clinical experience. Shannon uses a conservative, anatomy-informed approach — enhancing your natural features rather than chasing an overtreated look. Every treatment plan is built around your specific anatomy, concerns, and goals.

The Science

Hyaluronic acid —
the body's own volume molecule.

"Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that attracts and retains water — it is the molecule responsible for the plump, hydrated appearance of healthy, youthful skin."

As we age, the body produces progressively less hyaluronic acid, and the HA that remains becomes less able to retain moisture. The result is the gradual loss of facial volume, the flattening of cheeks, the deepening of nasolabial folds, and the thinning of lips — the hallmarks of facial aging that fillers address most directly.

Juvéderm and Restylane products are cross-linked hyaluronic acid gels — engineered to remain stable in the tissue for months to years, gradually integrating with the surrounding skin and breaking down naturally over time. Because they are made of the same substance the skin already produces, they integrate seamlessly with the surrounding tissue and carry a well-established safety profile across decades of clinical use.

Treatment Areas

Where fillers work.

Juvéderm and Restylane have specific product formulations designed for each treatment area — different viscosities, lift capacities, and integration properties for lips, cheeks, and structural areas. Shannon selects the right product for each specific concern.

01

Lip Augmentation

6–12 Months

Adding volume, definition, and shape to the lips. Shannon uses ultra-soft formulations for natural-looking lip enhancement — plumper without looking obviously filled. Lip flip, cupid's bow definition, and overall volume are tailored to your specific lip anatomy.

02

Cheeks & Midface

12–24 Months

Restoring the lifted, projected cheekbones and midface volume that aging deflates. Cheek filler is one of the highest-impact treatments available — lifting the face by restoring volume to its structural apex, which also softens nasolabial folds.

03

Nasolabial Folds

12–18 Months

Softening the lines running from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Nasolabial folds deepen as midface volume is lost — filler placed strategically in the fold and/or the cheek above it progressively softens this prominent aging feature.

04

Tear Troughs

12–18 Months

Addressing the hollow under-eye depression that creates the appearance of tiredness and shadows beneath the eyes. Tear trough filler is one of the most technically demanding treatments — Shannon's experience and conservative approach are critical to achieving a natural, refreshed result.

05

Jawline & Chin

12–18 Months

Defining and strengthening the jawline, adding chin projection, or improving facial symmetry. Jawline and chin filler produce structural improvements to the lower face that complement both Botox and KYBELLA as part of a comprehensive lower face plan.

06

Marionette Lines

12–18 Months

Softening the lines from the corners of the mouth downward to the chin that deepen with age and create a downturned expression. Filler placed strategically in the marionette area restores a more neutral or positive resting expression.

Candidacy

Who is a good candidate?

Dermal fillers are appropriate for adults experiencing volume loss, contour changes, or deepening lines associated with facial aging. Common presentations we treat include:

  • Loss of cheek volume and midface deflation
  • Lips that have thinned or lost definition with age
  • Deep nasolabial folds or marionette lines
  • Hollow tear troughs creating a tired or sunken appearance
  • Loss of jawline definition or early jowl formation
  • Chin asymmetry or lack of projection
  • Overall facial volume loss producing a gaunt or aged appearance

Shannon will assess your anatomy, discuss your goals, and recommend the specific products and placement strategy most appropriate for your individual face. She doses conservatively — it is always easier to add more at a follow-up than to over-treat initially.

Pairs well with

Fillers work synergistically with Botox — neuromodulators relax the dynamic muscles causing expression lines, while fillers restore the static volume and contours that relaxed muscles alone cannot address. Many patients benefit from both as part of a comprehensive facial rejuvenation plan. Profound Lift and CO2RE resurfacing further compound the result by addressing structural laxity and surface quality.

What to Expect

Treatment, timeline, & results.

Appointment

30–60 Min

Filler appointments take 30 to 60 minutes depending on the number of areas treated. Topical numbing is applied beforehand and most Juvéderm and Restylane products contain lidocaine for additional in-session comfort. Shannon marks the treatment areas and discusses the plan before beginning.

Sensation

Mild Pressure

Most patients describe filler injections as mild pressure or pinching — well tolerated with topical numbing. The lidocaine in most HA products provides progressive numbing as the treatment proceeds. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by the comfort level.

Downtime

1–3 Days

Swelling and bruising are the most common post-treatment effects — mild to moderate and typically resolving within one to three days. Lips tend to swell more than other areas. Arnica and cold packs minimize bruising. Most patients return to normal activity the same day or the next morning.

Results

Immediate, Lasting

Filler results are visible immediately, with the final result settling after any swelling resolves — typically three to five days. Results last 6 to 24 months depending on the area, product, and individual metabolism. Maintenance treatments before results fully fade produce the most consistent long-term outcome.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is the difference between Juvéderm and Restylane?
Both are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers but they differ in their cross-linking technology and consistency. Juvéderm products tend to be smoother and more cohesive — suited for lips and areas requiring natural movement. Restylane products have a slightly more structured consistency suited for cheeks and areas needing lift and support. Shannon selects the right product for each treatment area and patient at your consultation — you do not need to choose between them.
How long do fillers last?
Results vary by product, treatment area, and individual metabolism. Lips typically last 6 to 12 months. Cheeks and midface can last 12 to 24 months. Jawline and chin last 12 to 18 months on average. Tear troughs tend to last 12 to 18 months. Shannon discusses expected longevity for your specific treatment plan at your consultation — and timing maintenance appointments before results fully fade produces the most consistent long-term outcome.
Can fillers be reversed?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase — an enzyme that breaks down HA gel and reverses the filler. This makes Juvéderm and Restylane uniquely reversible compared to other injectable products. Shannon carries hyaluronidase at Desert Sands and discusses this option during your consultation. The ability to reverse the treatment if needed is one of the reasons Shannon prefers HA fillers for most treatment areas.
Is filler painful?
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by the comfort level of filler treatments. Topical numbing cream is applied before treatment and most Juvéderm and Restylane products contain lidocaine — a local anesthetic that provides progressive comfort as the treatment proceeds. Most patients describe injections as mild pressure or pinching rather than sharp pain. Shannon's technique and pacing minimize discomfort throughout.
Can fillers be combined with Botox?
Yes — and this combination is among the most common and effective in aesthetics. Botox relaxes dynamic muscles causing expression lines, while fillers restore the static volume and contours that muscle relaxation cannot address alone. Many patients receive both in the same appointment. Shannon designs comprehensive injectable plans that use each modality where it works best.
