Collagen Induction Therapy

Your skin's own
repair system, activated.

Microneedling — clinically known as collagen induction therapy — works on a simple principle: give the skin a controlled, precise signal to heal, and it will rebuild itself stronger. The MDPen device creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin's surface, triggering the body's natural wound-healing cascade without surgery, harsh chemicals, or significant downtime.

The result of that cascade is new collagen and elastin — the two proteins responsible for firm, smooth, youthful skin. As the skin heals over the weeks following treatment, it becomes noticeably denser, more even in texture, and better able to hold moisture. Scars fill in. Fine lines soften. Sun damage fades. Pores tighten.

According to the International Journal of Dermatology, microneedling is effective for skin rejuvenation, tightening, and scar remodeling — and is increasingly the treatment of choice for patients seeking real, lasting results without the recovery associated with laser or surgical procedures.

  • Stimulates natural collagen and elastin production
  • Minimally invasive — no surgery, no harsh lasers
  • Effective for face, neck, décolletage, hands, and body
  • Dramatically increases absorption of post-treatment serums
  • Results continue improving for weeks after each session

What Microneedling Treats

Six reasons patients
come to Desert Sands.

Microneedling is one of the most versatile skin treatments available — effective across a wide range of concerns and skin types. These are the six most common conditions our patients treat.

01

Acne Scars

The most sought-after indication for microneedling. Collagen induction therapy breaks down scar tissue while building new, healthy collagen in its place — gradually improving the depth, texture, and appearance of post-acne scarring with each session.

02

Fine Lines & Wrinkles

The new collagen and elastin produced after microneedling physically fills and tightens lines — particularly effective for fine lines around the eyes, forehead creases, and lip lines. Results accumulate over a series of treatments.

03

Sun Damage & Pigmentation

Southern Utah's high-altitude UV exposure accelerates pigmentation and skin aging faster than most climates. Microneedling helps reverse this damage by stimulating cell turnover and breaking up uneven melanin deposits in the skin's surface layers.

04

Skin Texture & Tone

Rough, uneven texture from environmental damage, aging, or residual scarring responds predictably to a series of microneedling treatments. The skin's surface becomes noticeably smoother and more uniform with improved light reflection.

05

Large Pores

As surrounding collagen tightens during the healing response, enlarged pores appear smaller and more refined. This is particularly visible in patients with oily or combination skin types where pore size is a primary concern.

06

Stretch Marks & Body

Microneedling at Desert Sands isn't limited to the face. It can be performed on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and other body areas to address stretch marks, laxity, and texture — priced based on the area treated.

How Microneedling Works

The science of controlled renewal.

01

Micro-Channel Creation

The MDPen device passes over the skin at a precise depth, creating thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the epidermis and upper dermis. These channels are invisible to the naked eye but significant enough to activate the body's full repair response.

02

Wound Healing Cascade

The body immediately sends blood, platelets, and growth factors to the treatment area — initiating the same cellular machinery used to heal any wound, except here it's precisely controlled for cosmetic benefit rather than injury repair.

03

Collagen & Elastin Formation

Over the following weeks, fibroblasts in the dermis produce new collagen and elastin — the structural proteins that give skin its firmness, bounce, and smooth surface. This process continues for up to 3–6 months after each session.

04

Cumulative Results

Each treatment builds on the last. A series of 3 or more sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart produces substantially more collagen remodeling than a single treatment — which is why Desert Sands offers 15% off packages of 3 or more.

Your Treatment Experience

What to expect at
every appointment.

01

Numbing

A topical numbing agent is applied 20–30 minutes before the procedure begins. By the time Tiffany starts, the skin is thoroughly numb and most patients feel only a mild vibration from the MDPen device throughout.

02

Treatment

The MDPen passes over the skin in a systematic pattern for 30–60 minutes. Tiffany adjusts needle depth and speed based on each zone — thicker skin areas like the cheeks receive a deeper pass than delicate areas around the eyes.

03

Serums Applied

Immediately post-treatment, a recovery serum is applied while the micro-channels are still open — maximizing absorption of active ingredients deep into the skin. The skin will appear pink to red, fading within 24–48 hours.

04

Aftercare

You'll leave with your included post-care kit and written instructions. Avoid sun and makeup for 24 hours. Mild dryness, tightness, and light peeling may occur over the following days and resolve without intervention.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is microneedling and how does it work?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a professional device to create thousands of microscopic channels in the skin's surface. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the body's natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of new collagen and elastin. The result is firmer, smoother, and more even-toned skin over the weeks following treatment — without surgery, injections, or significant downtime.
How much does microneedling cost?
Microneedling at Desert Sands starts at $325 for the face — and every treatment of $325 or more includes a post-care kit valued at $120. Face and neck is $375. Face, neck, and décolletage is $450. Hands are $125. Body areas are priced based on the area — call (435) 522-5190 for a quote. Packages of 3 or more treatments on the same area receive 15% off total price.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients see meaningful improvement after a single session, but a series of 3 or more treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart produces the best long-term results. For significant acne scarring or stretch marks, 4–6 sessions may be recommended. Tiffany will suggest a personalized treatment plan at your consultation.
Is microneedling painful?
A topical numbing cream is applied 20–30 minutes before the session begins. By the time treatment starts, most patients report feeling only a mild vibration from the MDPen device. The treatment is widely considered very comfortable — significantly more so than laser resurfacing — and the numbing cream makes any sensation minimal.
What is the downtime after microneedling?
Downtime is minimal. Skin appears pink to red immediately after — similar to a mild to moderate sunburn. Avoid direct sun and makeup for the first 24 hours. Most patients experience redness and mild tightness that resolves within 24–48 hours. Some dryness, light peeling, and roughness may occur over the following days and resolve on their own. Most patients are comfortable returning to normal activities within 1–2 days.
Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Microneedling pairs powerfully with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) for enhanced collagen stimulation, and complements chemical peels and laser treatments as part of a comprehensive skin renewal program. The micro-channels created during microneedling dramatically increase the absorption of any serums or growth factors applied post-treatment — which is why your included post-care kit makes a meaningful difference in your results.
